What do Rainforest Trust do?
Rainforest Trust purchases and protects the most threatened tropical forests, saving endangered wildlife through partnerships and community engagement. So far, they have protected more than 42.7 million acres by establishing protected areas in partnership with local organizations and engaged communities across more than 68 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia-Pacific.
Rainforest Trust are confident that the simplest and most cost-effective solution to prevent deforestation is to create legally-recognized protected areas where forests and their species can continue contributing to the health of the global ecosystem. Through highly effective local partnerships Rainforest Trust ensure sustainable results necessary for the long-term protection of tropical ecosystems and the wildlife they hold. Their reserves are exemplary models of international conservation. Rainforest Trust identifies critical sites that provide a permanent refuge for endangered species, but that face immediate and direct threats typically from loggers, miners or ranchers.
Why The Rainforest?
Tropical rainforests support over 50% of the world’s species, many of which are critically endangered, and are home to thousands of indigenous communities who rely on the forests for their food, water and economic prosperity. The world’s rainforests produce 20% of the planet’s oxygen, stabilise global weather patterns and safely store billions of tonnes of carbon, helping to fight climate change . In short, they are one of the most important natural resources on Earth, and their long-term protection is vital for the survival of our planet and the countless species that inhabit it – including us.
Tropical deforestation accounts for up to 15% of net global carbon emissions each year. Safeguarding existing rainforests is one of the most efficient and cost-effective ways an individual can fight climate change, as every acre safely stores over 100 tonnes of carbon that could otherwise enter the atmosphere as the greenhouse gas CO2. Studies have shown that halting tropical deforestation and allowing for regrowth could mitigate up to 50% of net global carbon emissions in the next 30 years – yet rainforests are still being cut down at a rate of 70,000 acres a day.
What are The Main Threats to The Rainforest
